Waterproofing Basement Walls

Do: Find The Water Source

If you notice a significant water collection on the floor or wet walls, you need to investigate further. A way to determine if there is a leak or water damage is to perform a condensation test.

Here’s how to do it: 

• Dry a portion of the wall
• Stick some foil onto the wall and secure it with duct tape
• Let it sit for 24 hours
• Remove the duct tape and feel the foil

If the foil is dry, then you probably don’t leak. However, if the foil is damp or wet, that is a sign that water is seeping through your concrete. 

Don’t: Work When There Is Water in the Basement

Instead, be sure to turn off the power supply and unplug anything electrical. Then, you can use a pump to dry out the damaged areas. 

Do: Use Cement 

All you have to do is go to your local hardware store and find a tub of Quikrete. Mix it with water, and apply it to the cracks. It will create a tight bond in your concrete and prevent further water damage.
