Your patio should be an extension of your house. It should be a private retreat where you can go to relax and enjoy the outdoors with those you love.

Unless it’s hideous.

When you have an ugly patio, spending time there is the last thing you want.

You may think, “Decorate my patio? That has to be expensive and time-consuming.”

Not so! You can start small by incorporating a few outdoor design tips into your space.

These 4 patio ideas will help transform your outdoor space into a unique retreat for you and your loved ones – a space you will actually want to spend time in.

1. Add Green Space With Container Gardening

If your patio size is small, container gardening is a great way to have patio décor with limited available space.

Don’t worry if you don’t have a green thumb, you don’t need a lot of plants to spruce up your backyard patio. Even a little greenery is better than nothing and will add some color to your patio décor.

Unless you have a lot of time, avoid climbing vines and other fast-growing plants that require maintenance. Opt for low-maintenance patio plants like marigolds, geraniums, or heucheras (also known as coral bells).

If your backyard décor also includes an outdoor kitchen, you can even opt to grow herbs for your kitchen.

2. Use Stamped Concrete

When you think of a concrete patio you may think it boring, but that doesn’t have to be the case. A stamped concrete patio allows you to have a gorgeous custom patio at an affordable price.

Stamped concrete is textured or imprinted concrete. There’s a wide variety of patterns and colors available. Stamped concrete can imitate flagstone, brick, or even wood.

The drawback is that it’s not very DIY-friendly. Fortunately, Advanced Construction Services has lots of experience with concrete patios, so we can make help with your patio renovation, or even build you a new patio.

3. Buy All-Weather Patio Furniture

Durable patio furniture, like thick wicker, will stand up to seasonal weather. Wicker furniture is sturdy and requires little maintenance.

Its lighter weight means it’s safer for children. If they accidentally tip it over, it won’t pose the hazard that heavier wooden furniture would.

It may not be very comfortable, but that can easily be changed with cushions and pillows. Plus, it’s easy to change the look by swapping out pillows and cushions.

Outside of wicker chairs, you can also opt for wicker benches and tables for additional patio decorations. Of course, if you have another outdoor living space such as a deck, wicker furniture makes for great deck decorations. There’s nothing like lounging in your new wicker furniture, drink in hand, enjoying the view.

4. Hang String Lights

One of the simplest and most affordable ways to decorate a patio is by hanging lights. String lights are the best option for those on a budget.

Most string lights have similar features but if you want to spring for a fancier option, there are even string lights that connect to your WIFI and allow you to control them via using an app on your phone.

Besides string lights, other lighting options include pole lighting, track lighting, and lanterns.
