Have you noticed that your basement is taking on more water than usual? Since people’s basements rest below ground, it is typical of them to experience some form of water leakage.
You may see drips here and there and the occasional puddle. But if your basement experiences a flood or severe water damage, you need to fix the problem right away.
Water that sits in a basement can create mold, which affects your overall health and lungs. Waterproofing basement walls requires knowing what can help or hinder your progress if you want to know how to properly find a solution; keeping reading for our guide to waterproofing dos and don’ts.
If you notice a significant water collection on the floor or wet walls, you need to investigate further. A way to determine if there is a leak or water damage is to perform a condensation test.
Here’s how to do it:
If the foil is dry, then you probably don’t leak. However, if the foil is damp or wet, that is a sign that water is seeping through your concrete.
Instead, be sure to turn off the power supply and unplug anything electrical. Then, you can use a pump to dry out the damaged areas.
All you have to do is go to your local hardware store and find a tub of Quikrete. Mix it with water, and apply it to the cracks. It will create a tight bond in your concrete and prevent further water damage.
Another source of leaks is basement window wells. That happens when there is no proper drainage system applied to the basement’s internal structure.
Aside from installing a whole new drainage system, you can dig around the window and fill the space with gravel. That should soak up any water that seeps in.
That way, you can seal over any exposed areas in the cement. Alternatively, you might be more comfortable hiring a waterproofing company. If that is the case, you can always look into a company like us here at Advanced Construction and read about our waterproofing services.
